George Soros’ Entrepreneurial Journey and Political Involvement

George Soros is the best example of from rags to riches. After fleeing Hungary, his home country, he did all the odd jobs in London, including working in a hotel and as a railway porter. While at these jobs, Soros could not contain his desire for success and it led him to enroll in a finance course at London School of Economics. Equipped with his papers, he went on to land a job at a local merchant bank. In 1969, he left London for New York and started the Quantum Fund, a hedge fund he fully managed. His major breakthrough, however, came in the early 1990s when he joined hands with Stan Druckenmiller, one of the then Quantum Fund managers, to successfully short the sterling pound. Today, Soros invests in the hedge fund industry through Soros Fund Management, a company he has seen its asset worth grow from $12 million to $30 billion over the last 38 years. Dawn Fitzpatrick is the current CIO of Soros Fund Management, a position she was given early this year.

Soros’ Political Involvement

Within the American political circles, George Soros is inclined towards the Democratic Party. His first major political involvement was in 2004 when he donated a whopping $27 million to fund the campaign of John Kerry against President George Bush. After Kerry had lost, Soros went into a 12-year political hibernation until last year when he re-emerged to support Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid. Sources from the Democratic Party and the data obtained from the Federal Election Commission, Soros made donations of not less than $25 million to fund Hillary’s campaign. His close associates revealed that he wanted to attend the Democratic convention to listen to Hillary’s acceptance speech after she won the presidential nominations. His plans, however, did not materialize as he got tied up in a business trip in Europe. The associates further revealed that Soros was planning to increase his funding as the elections day approached. Read his profile at Forbes.

Criticizing Trump

It could be interesting to know the main reason that prompted George Soros to re-emerge so strongly from his hibernation at 85 years of age. Rumors, which could not be far from the truth, had it that his sour relationship with the then Republican candidate, Mr. Donald Trump, had prompted him to return to politics. According to Michael Vachon, a political expert and a close political confidant of Soros, the seasoned entrepreneur felt a Trump presidency would threaten his beliefs. In particular, Soros showed an outward criticism towards Trump’s stand on the American immigration policy, religion tolerance, and the criminal justice system. After his big money entry in the presidential campaign, Soros motivated other anti-Trump billionaires to jump on the Democratic bandwagon. Among the notable businessmen who followed Soros’ steps included Tom Steyer, Don Sussman, Fred Eychaner, and Haim Saban.

EOS Lip Balms, How They Have Dominated The Market

Originally, the chap stick market was full of generic and cookie cutter little tubes that came a dime a dozen. All of that has changed though, since EOS, a company that sells lip balms, is the unspoken king of the market with a two-hundred-and-fifty-million-dollar valuation that is expected to increase to two billion dollars by 2020.

According to Fast Company, Jonathan Teller, Craig Dubitsky, and Mehra started EOS almost ten years ago after realizing that the chap stick market had a lot of untapped potential. Instead of going the traditional route and marketing a chapstick product for both genders, the three founders instead decided to market towards woman, which were the overwhelming majority of chap-stick users in the first place. When they created their product they realized that it really needed to stand out, so they made the EOS lip balm with all organic ingredients and used a unique packaging that is immediately noticeable in a sea of generic chap-sticks. EOS lip balms are also made with all organic materials, and in an age where people are coming increasingly more aware of what they are putting in and on their body, this becomes a huge selling point on Racked. Not only did EOS create a unique product, they also priced it competitively with more traditional chapstick products and brands, meaning that there really is no reason to buy a more traditional and generic chapstick brand when EOS has created something that is unique and vastly superior.

How Mike Heiligenstein and CTRMA are Improving Austin’s Transportation Network

Williamson County held its growth summit at the Sheraton Georgetown Texas Hotel several months ago. The summit presented an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss the transportation challenges facing the suburban communities in Austin.

The panel comprised of Leandre Johns who is the director of external affairs in Texas for Uber, Mike Heiligenstein who is the executive director of Central Texas Mobility Authority, and Joseph Kopser who is the founder of RideScout.

Heiligenstein called for the need for more roads to be built and the need to make these roads smarter. He mentioned that this was the only way they could meet the mobility demands of the growing population of the suburbs. He acknowledged that autonomous cars would play a big part in transportation in the future.

He stated that adoption could be slow and it would take time for these technologies to be fully integrated. Johns said that ride-sharing companies would help people to access public transit quicker. This would reduce the number of cars on the road since more people would opt for public transportation.

Mike Heiligenstein has served as the director of the Central Texas Mobility Authority since it was started in 2002. Heiligenstein worked as a civil servant in Williamson County for 23 years before joining the body.

According to Biz Journals, Heiligenstein serves as the president of the International Bridge, Tunnel, and Turnpike Association. Heiligenstein is a member of several transportation committees in Austin including the Texas A&M Transportation Institute.

The authority is developing MoPac Express Lanes which will incorporate variable tolling to regulate traffic flow. The system will control the supply and demand of the roads and ensure that traffic flow is predictable.

They are also planning to add fiber lines to the projects that they are developing so that cars can communicate with the roadway. These smart roads will be able to monitor road activity and provide a wholesome experience to motorists in the end.

CTRMA collaborated with Metropia to develop a mobile app that recommends alternative routes in real-time. The app is directly connected to the traffic monitoring system. It can detect the roads are congested and those that are not.

There are close to a million empty seats on cars each day. This results from the drivers who travel alone. CTRMA realized that this was a big problem and that is why they partnered with Carma to fill these empty seats. Carma is a carpooling app. Congestion will decrease if the cars are reduced on the road.
